Four moose were introduced to the Island of Newfoundland near the town of Howley in 1904. Today, there is an estimated population of 120,000 – 140,000. Moose are the largest member of the deer family with males known as bulls weighing over 1000 lbs and standing over 7 feet tall. The female or cows are slightly smaller.
The rut or breeding season begins around the middle of September and continue until late October. During the rut the bulls seek out the cows. At this time the bulls are very aggressive and curious, investigating every sound in the woods which make it very easy for guides to call the bulls in close during the hunt.
